Feed Quality

The Furst-McNess Feed Preservation and Improvement Program is designed to help producers achieve their forage management goals.  Over 15 years of development has gone into the scientifically-tested, quality-controlled and manufactured silage inoculants that form the basis of this program.

Making quality ensiled forages requires using all the tools at your disposal: a solid agronomic program, harvesting at optimal moisture content, timely and well-coordinated chopping, processing, delivery and packing, and finally, use of a quality inoculant to help drive a robust fermentation and improve odds for quality results.  Our program is flexible to meet your needs as you define them. 

Feed Preservation and Improvement Program 

GOAL 1: 
DRIVE ROBUST FERMENTATION

MICROSILE contains a highly-effective combination of select strains of lactic acid bacteria (LABs) plus microbial stimulants that deliver robust fermentation, rapidly converting sugars into lactic acid.  The speed and extent of fermentation quickly drops pH, slowing the growth of spoilage bacteria and inhibits the plant’s natural protein-degrading enzymes.  This results in a palatable and stable silage with minimal nutrient and dry matter loss.

GOAL 2:
IMPROVE STABILITY OF SILAGE FACE AND EXTEND BUNK LIFE

While maintaining the same core technologies contained in Goal 1, SILAGE STARTER PRO-B adds a proprietary strain of L. Brevis and sugar-producing enzymes.  During fermentation, SILAGE STARTER PRO-B contributes to the pH drop.  More importantly, at feed-out, when silage is exposed to oxygen, SILAGE STARTER PRO-B preferentially converts sugars into acetic acid.  This stabilizes the silage in two ways.  First, by inhibiting heating and loss of palatability caused by fungal growth (molds and yeast).  Second, by not using lactic acid to produce acetic acid, a low pH is maintained inhibiting microbial growth (pathogens and spoilage).  The result is a cool, stable feed without the loss in palatability that comes from excess acetic acid and other metabolites commonly appearing with the use of other inoculant products.

GOAL 3:
IMPROVE THE AVAILABILITY OF NUTRIENTS LOCKED IN THE FORAGE

While maintaining the same core technologies contained in Goals 1 and 2, SILAGE STARTER ADVANCE adds crop-specific enzymes targeting the unique fiber configurations of different forages without compromising the structural integrity of the feed.  This helps separate the cellulosic fraction from the lignin fraction of forages, increasing the digestibility and/or fermentability of the silage making more nutrients available to the animal.  SILAGE STARTER ADVANCE has crop-specific formulations for Corn Silage, Legume, Grass and Tropical Grass.

FEED STABILIZER

PROFRESH PLUS is a dry granular, buffered propionic acid-based preservation for use in the prevention of fungal growth in animal feeds, total mixed rations, silages and stored grains.  The slow release formula gives effective prolonged control of aerobic spoilage yeast and mold, resulting in higher retained feed value.

FEED QUALITY

Research indicates that the addition of direct-fed microbials has been shown to maintain performance in ruminants and maintain production in monograstric animals.  Furst-McNess has developed a series of broad-spectrum products that support the health and performance of the animal when fed inconsistent and/or poor feed quality.  These species-specific products contain patented technology that is backed by 15 years of research.
